JOHN MAIBOHM – an artistic self-description (July 27, 2026)
My artistic works often form groups linked by shared elements or themes, or by aesthetic or technical similarities, therethrough my oevre gets a polystylistic character in formal terms. For each creative challenge, I strive to find the appropriate response or the suitable aesthetic realization in terms of materials, proportions, or technique - like speaking different languages depending on the task at hand. Influenced by my studies in architecture, I am fascinated by the concept of space in connection with the study of civilization. Having spent my entire life in Berlin, I have been shaped by urban structures. The theme of landscape—nature as altered by humans—which is almost the antithesis of the natural world, reflects the relationship between humans and nature. Humans are often present in the imagery, but only indirectly, through the depiction of our interventions, by which we shape nature. Landscape serves as a thematic matrix through which other themes can be expressed, such as moods, feelings, insights, and summaries in the form of visual commentary; this gives rise to landscapes that go beyond a tranquil idyll. Irony is sometimes another meta-stylistic element that finds expression in work titles that are linguistically and conceptually exaggerated to the point of absurdity and, in conjunction with the work, form a self-contained unit that reinforces itself, such as:
„Golden Autumn of the Golden-Yellow Yellow-Gold-Gold-Money”, „Ministry of Mysteries”, „The Minister of Mysteries ministered in the Ministry of Mysteries”, „Demonstration of the Monstrous Monstrance”, „Clowds drain above Ukraine/ Wolken zieh´n über Ukrain´/ Nuages promènes sur l´Ukraine“, „Landlandlandscapescapescape,” or “SPYder.”
